Along with Purdue, about two dozen other pharmaceuticals are being sued for allegedly conspiring to addict the nation on the powerful painkillers. The companies have frequently blamed the opioid crisis on doctors and pharmacies for overprescribing, as well as on patients for abusing the drugs.
As for Purdue and the eight Sacklers named in lawsuits—all involved denied the allegations, and said they are united in their desire to resolve all litigation. The company and three family members, however, pleaded guilty in 2007 to federal charges of misleading the public on OxyContin’s addictiveness between 1995 and 2001, according to theCollectively they paid over $630 million in penalties, with Purdue also signing a five-year corporate integrity agreement with the U.S. government.
