A longtime federal prosecutor who worked on civil litigation in the San Diego U.S. Attorney’s Office was sworn in Friday as the newest federal magistrate judge in the San Diego area.of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, which covers San Diego and Imperial counties. Chu is the first Asian American to serve as a magistrate judge in the district.

Magistrate judges serve eight-year terms by appointment, as opposed to district judges who are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate for life terms.
