Canandaigua, N.Y. There's growing debates over a proposed measure that could impact local fire departments.
Rick Roxin, president of the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department , speaking at a press conference Monday, Aug. 12, 2024, at his department's station on State Route 21 in Canandaigua, regarding newly proposed OSHA regulations. Volunteer firefighters joined New York Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and several other state officials Monday at the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department 's station on State Route 21 in Canandaigua to sound the alarm on the topic.
They say 22 newly proposed regulations from OSHA, which include mandatory facility upgrades and increased training requirements, could cause a heavy financial burden for local volunteer fire organizations, possibly even resulting in some of them closing down. "We're very concerned that the OSHA rules and regulations may make it extremely difficult for us to not only keep the members that we have, but also to continually attract new members" added Rick Roxin, president of the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department. "Are we going to be able to fund a new fire truck? Or a rescue pump or a ladder? As you might guess, costs for acquiring that type of apparatus is skyrocketing, and we need to be able to answer those changes.
"A lot of these rules can be amended, or some of them are not necessary. We're not saying to throw out the entire rule," Tenney said. "We're not saying we don't stand for public safety. We stand absolutely for public safety, but we can maintain the highest standards of public safety without some of these rules."
