) - Reactions are pouring in following the Southern Poverty Law Center ’s indictment by the Justice Department on allegations that the organization funded groups it claimed to be fighting.
“Although we have not seen formal charges, we are aware of the press conference held today at the U.S. Department of Justice and the indictment evidently returned by a grand jury against our organization. We are outraged by the false allegations levied against SPLC – an organization that for 55 years has stood as a beacon of hope fighting white supremacy and various forms of injustice to create a multi-racial democracy where we can all live and thrive.
Taking on violent hate and extremist groups is among the most dangerous work there is, and we believe it is also among the most important work we do. To be clear, this program saved lives.
“The actions by the DOJ will not shake our resolve to fight for justice and ensure the promise of the Civil Rights movement becomes a reality for all. SPLC will vigorously defend ourselves, our staff and our work; we will continue to fight hate; and we will continue to envision and create a safer and more just world.
” American Civil Liberties Union later released a statement in support of the SPLC, accusing the DOJ of attempting to silence the organization: “The investigation into the Southern Poverty Law Center is yet another example of the Trump administration’s extreme attempts to silence its critics. This administration’s continued weaponization of the Justice Department to target organizations speaking out against its agenda is anti-American behavior harkening back to the McCarthy era.
“The ACLU stands in solidarity with the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC’s work fighting hate, racism, and injustice in the American South has played a critical role in strengthening the civil rights of millions of Americans. While the Trump administration may not agree with the SPLC’s civil rights mission or work, its efforts to target the organization are fundamentally wrong.
“The Trump administration’s attack against the Southern Poverty Law Center is a direct threat to the values that make America great. In this time of unprecedented peril for our democracy, we urge all Americans of good conscience to join us as we stand in support of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
” American Democracy Coalition also released a similar statement, claiming the DOJ is trying to ‘intimidate Civil Rights organizations’ like the SPLC: “Trump and his DOJ’s recent targeting of the Southern Poverty Law Center is a blatant attempt to intimidate civil rights organizations from doing the important work of defending Americans’ freedom to live free from hate and discrimination. ” “This administration is taking actions to dismantle our civil rights and secure absolute power - free of accountability from watchdogs and organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center, who have a longstanding history documenting hate and violence while standing up for civil rights.
” “Our coalition and the pro-democracy movement will not be intimidated. We will continue to speak up in support of civil rights, and the organizations that for decades secured and protected our rights and freedoms. ” Alabama AG announces $12.2M child safety settlement with online gaming platform Roblox High school basketball coach accused of sex crimes with student after leading team to state championship
