Coming into the San Diego Section Division I boys basketball championship game, last year’s title game was still on the minds of most of the La Jolla Country Day squad.It haunted them every step of the way.La Jolla Country Day lost an 18-point nonleague game earlier this season to Mission Bay.La Jolla Country Day used a productive first quarter — that ended in sophomore Ely Elegado’s 3-pointer — to take charge of the game and never relented.
La Jolla Country Day, now 23-7, grabbed a 20-17 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead or control of the game. “With him, we had a chip on our shoulder,” Elegado said. “That’s why this was not as big a surprise as losing the way we did this year.”
