Liverpool sailor lynched by racist mob remembered in memorial plaque by LeahMahon_
Charles Wooten died during the race riots of 1919 which erupted after white soldiers returning from World War One grew resentful of immigrantsA SAILOR who died after being chased by a racist white mob has finally been given a permanent headstone where he was laid to rest.
The momentous day comes after years of campaigning by the Liverpool Black History Research Group who worked with the Liverpool Enslaved Memorial Project to create the monumental headstone. Charles’ story clearly shows that not only were black people here, but we were contributing by fighting and dying for this country, the ultimate sacrifice for any subject to make for their nation,” he added.
A 24-year-old Wooten managed to escape and was chased by a mob of hundreds towards the docks. He ended up in the waters below, was pelted by stones and brutally hit in the head. “When it comes to racism, people need to fully understand that it isn’t simply about individuals. More importantly, it’s actually about the structures, it’s about the system.
“The fights are never over. The fight’s been going on for 500 years. So, I don’t see it being over even when I’ve left the planet,” the Liverpool 8 activist said.
