MATAGORDA, Tex. — Hurricane Beryl has made landfall near Matagorda, Tex., the National Hurricane Center said around 4 a.m. Central time on Monday. Beryl, which strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane as it approached Texas, tore through parts of the Caribbean, where it killed at least 11 people, wrecked homes and toppled power lines.
Storm surges of up to 7 feet, strong winds and flash flooding are expected in some parts of Texas, the Hurricane Center said. “Steady to rapid weakening” is expected as the center moves inland, the Hurricane Center said. Beryl is expected to weaken to a tropical storm later Monday and to a tropical depression on Tuesday.
