Beryl is forecast to make landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday. It’s gaining strength in the Gulf after hitting Mexico, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands.
Hurricane Beryl will probably produce several tornadoes as it comes ashore. The tornado threat may extend several days past landfall and could accompany the storm’s remnants through the Mid-South on Monday and perhaps even to the Ohio Valley or Mid-Atlantic later in the week. Tropical systems are moisture-loaded, meaning downpours and thunderstorms have low cloud bases. That makes it easier for any areas of rotation within storms to snake down to the ground.
Low-level onshore winds slow down as they encounter friction over land, but winds just above the ground continue rushing ashore unimpeded. That means any downpours that grow tall enough will encounter those changing winds and rotate, often producing tornadoes. That will be a concern along the mid-Texas coast Sunday, with a threat that will extend from Port Lavaca to Houston to the Golden Triangle along the Louisiana border.
