BAY CITY, Tex. — Mike Beggs sat in his black pickup outside the hotel where he and his wife fled, wondering what remained of their home a half-hour’s drive away in Sargent, Tex. “I’m wondering if we’ll still have a place,” said Beggs, 66. The couple has owned land in Sargent for 13 years, and moved down full-time a year ago to an RV on the property after Beggs retired from his job outside Austin. What was supposed to be a quiet retirement has been anything but.
“I probably lost it all again,” he said. Beggs spent Monday morning scrolling through social media to see how bad the damage was in his area, until his cell signal failed. He hadn’t heard from the few friends and neighbors who stayed behind in Sargent — though he had heard that the flooding and downed poles made getting home nearly impossible for the moment. “We knew this wasn’t going to be good,” he said of why he evacuated.
