The writers of The Simpsons join the WGA's 2023 writers strike, bearing signs with slogans related to some of the show's popular moments.
The Simpsons writers joined the writers strike in week 6 for a memorable day. The strike, which just concluded week 6, began when the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers couldn't strike a deal with the Writers Guild of America. The WGA is fighting for expanded writers rooms, restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence, residuals for streaming programs, and many other issues that have affected compensation and job security in Hollywood.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Deadline, writers from classic and modern The Simpsons episodes alike recently joined the picket lines outside Fox, including Conan O’Brien, James L. Brooks, Matt Selman, Al Jean, and Dana Gould. Also present was the show's co-creator Matt Groening. While many picketers brought their own Simpsons-related signs, Groening also drew custom signs featuring Simpsons characters and slogans like "Lisa needs residuals.
There is precedent for this being the case, in fact. The Simpsons writers joined the picket lines in 2007 for the last major WGA strike, but seasons 20 and 21 still aired in September 2007 and 2008 as planned. Unless the writers strike goes on for much longer than the previous strike's 16 weeks, The Simpsons' air dates likely won't be impacted.
This isn't the case with other animated series. Indeed, one of the first major productions to be put on pause during the strike was Netflix's Big Mouth season 6. Depending on how negotiations go, the future of The Simpsons could eventually become one of the biggest bargaining chips toward striking a fair deal for writers.
