Applications for payments from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in Georgia will close in four days.
LIHEAP is a federal assistance program that helps financially hard-pressed citizens pay their utility bills. It assists impoverished households with home energy bills, energy crises, and minor energy-related home repairs, also known as weatherization, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Each state operates the program autonomously, and funds are provided by the federal government.
To be eligible, applicants need to be U.S. citizens, have a gross annual household income at least 60% below the state's median income, and have full responsibility for paying for their home's energy bills.A limited number of applicants will be accepted due to limitations in funding. On average, LIHEAP benefits reach about 20% of those eligible. Once funds run out, no more may be used for the rest of the year until a new package is authorized by Congress.
LIHEAP payments apply only to heating and cooling costs. The payments do not cover other household costs, such as water or sewage bills.
