Re: “Democrats Must Face Migrant Crisis — NYC mayor’s concern invites both parties to work on a solution,” Sept. 16 Editorials.This editorial rightly emphasizes the urgency of addressing border management. It is crucial, however, to recognize that this is primarily a humanitarian crisis, not an existential threat to the United States.

As we stand on the precipice of the 2024 campaign season, we must rise above divisive narratives that mischaracterize our border communities as national security risks. The imperative is a rational policy that facilitates effective border management, humanitarian crisis response and long-term immigration reform. We urgently need to enhance the quality of life for the 2.8 million Texans living in the region.

We pay taxes to Washington, Austin, the county, public schools and hospitals. We are billed for water, sewers and trash pickup. What is left to city government, other than police, fire, parks and streets? Don’t we know that most things are better run by the private sector?
