I am always amazed when a group of intelligent people working together as a committee render decisions that make no practical sense. The city has decided to fine mostly homeless individuals $500, who have so little money that they stand on medians and beg drivers for their loose change? When they cannot pay the fine, they are now guilty of two crimes.

What a callous letter. Those cannonballs are hostile architecture. The quintessential example is putting spikes on benches so that homeless people can’t sleep on them. But just because they can’t lie down on a bench doesn’t mean they suddenly have a bed to sleep in. Putting up cannonballs may be cheaper than fighting lawsuits, but both cost our souls. Misanthropy is so rampant we’d rather arrest the hungry than give them food; we’d rather disperse homeless camps than build public housing.

Unfortunately, I think it is all too likely the legislative members will continue to deny a popular vote on many items on which they appear out of step with the majority of Texans, including abortion, gambling, marijuana legalization and Medicaid expansion. We’ll never know with 100% certainty what went through Aaron Dean’s mind as he fired the fatal shot. Taken at his word, it was a horrible misreading of the circumstances.
