In response to Stephen J. Lyons’ op-ed about not attending his 50th high school reunion, here’s why I was excited to go to mine.
Apprehensive to go to my 10th reunion, the first for my class, I was convinced to attend by a committee member. I was also afraid that the conversations would be very “high school”: comparing jobs, spouses, kids, homes and other material objects important to people. Instead, I learned that the jocks were no longer jerks; they had grown into mature adults. The homecoming queen now lived on a farm doing chores, and the pretensions were gone.
I found it interesting that while Lyons eschews almost everything about his high school years, he has somehow managed to hang on to his perfect attendance trophy. I hope he reconsiders his decision and gives his classmates a chance.— Paula Harte, Romeoville, IllinoisRegarding Stephen J. Lyons’ op-ed: I will be attending my 50th high school reunion. At first, I was not going to attend, as I attended only the 10th reunion.
It will be nice to catch up with my classmates to find out more about how their lives have evolved over the past 50 years. However, I agree with Lyons that hearing stories of illnesses, children and grandchildren can be very exhausting. However, that is now the norm for our generation, as many of us are retired; that is our life. Is it wise to discuss politics at this juncture? My answer is no. So without politics, all that is left to discuss is family, sports and our 401s.
