A few days after Lyndon B. Johnson assumed the presidency following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, he met with his advisors and told them he wanted to pass important civil rights legislation. One by one they told him all the reasons this could not and should not be done.
If our elected representatives are not able to solve an issue as important as keeping our children and ourselves safe – then why are they there? To paraphrase LBJ, then what is elected office for? As we participate in elections this year I urge everyone of us to hold the candidates accountable to solve the issue of gun violence. To get the discussion started I offer this idea: Treat gun owners and guns as we treat automobile owners and automobiles.• Every gun owner requires a license to own guns. Background check for red flags is required for a license to be given.• At license renewal check again for any red flags that would prohibit the licensing.
This model protects the rights of law-abiding citizens but is a step toward appropriate regulation, which is missing today. All it lacks is an appropriate number of our elected officials to show some courage and leadership.
