Yankees fans are hearing familiar voice on the radio late this season.
voice Suzyn Waldman for becoming reflective and nostalgic as longtime partner John Sterling returned to the radio waves with her this week.
Sterling has come out of retirement — which he announced in April — to call games through the end of the Yankees season, for however long that may be. In talking to WFAN about the connection she and Sterling have with fans and the meaning of their relationship, Waldman also expressed sadness for how technology has changed fans’ consumption habits.
Waldman isn’t wrong — there is something special about listening to a baseball game on the radio, almost more than any other spot. The advance of streaming, explosion of mobile devices and numerous other entertainment options, among multiple other factors, have contributed to waning radio listenership.“What did they say about Billy ? He was tanned and rested every time George brought him back? You could tell had missed it, and I thought it was great,” Waldman said.
