Nationals outfielder Lane Thomas hit a career-high 28 homers this season. He can probably take at least one or two deep breaths now.
Lane Thomas feels at home with the Nationals, his third organization in nine years. For an hour recently, Lane Thomas and Chase Henry Thomas sat on the same side of a booth on Capitol Hill, sharing French toast and a decade of baseball stories. They met in middle school and married last winter. Their conversation pattern is not finishing each other’s sentences — more weaving together memories with small interjections, the listener guiding the speaker from one scene to the next.
In one moment, they are back at the pool in Knoxville, Tenn., Lane watching the 2014 MLB draft on Chase’s laptop, Chase sitting on the lifeguard’s stand. Lane, a skinny outfielder, saw his name and bio strip across the bottom of the screen: Lane Thomas, right fielder, fifth-round pick for the Toronto Blue Jays out of Bearden High, 144th overall.
“We’ve been through everything,” Mike said. “They invited 144 guys to try out for that Team USA team when he was 16. He made the cut down to 44, then 20-some, then winds up in Taiwan winning it all. I told him: ‘You’ve been the best player on the field your whole life. What’s the difference now?’ ”“When Lane started seeing himself more like his dad saw him, that was huge,” Rice recalled. “Lane thought he was only good for Knoxville, Tennessee.
