They aren’t looking for saviors with the 17th and 47th picks in the draft, but they do need talented additions to a cast headed by superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Gone are the nights the NBA draft was among the quietest of the calendar year for the Lakers. Long gone are nights like the one in 2009, when the Lakers had no use for first-round pick Toney Douglas and second-round selection Patrick Beverley, so they swapped them for cash and future picks.
“We’re not going to rest on our laurels,” Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said one day after they were swept by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets. “If there’s opportunities to get even better – whether it’s through the draft, whether it’s through trades or free agency – we’re always looking to improve. But we have a core that is highly successful, and that’s a good starting point.
The Lakers also flipped a second-round pick in ‘22 to the Washington Wizards plus a package of players in order to complete the three-team deal.
