California replaced the term 'at-risk' with 'at-promise' in its education code in 2020.
A Los Angeles graduation ceremony which included students of the county’s juvenile court school system ended in a brawl Friday,at Walt Disney Concert Hall included over 100 high school graduates, including 29 detained youth on probation, LACPD wrote. The students stemmed from both the Los Angeles County Office of Education's juvenile court schools and the county's community schools.
After the ceremony, a community member jumped over a second-story balcony and assaulted a graduate, according to LACPD. The brawl sparked another melee outside the venue. All detained probation youth had already exited the auditorium and were placed in a secure holding area prior to the incident occurring,” the department wrote. “The Probation Special Enforcement Operations unit quickly responded, containing the incident and restoring order inside the auditorium. We are pleased to report that all detained probation graduates and Los Angeles County Office of Education graduates are uninjured, safe, and secure.
A member of Operation Graduation did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Crisis in the Classroom Monday. Operation Graduation helps “at-promise” students achieve high school graduation, 40% of whom enter the program at or below a fourth-grade level, its website says. These students often come from area juvenile court schools, which educate about 1,200 students per day to make up for deficiencies in reading and math skills.
