At least 33 people have been killed in a fire at an animation studio in Kyoto. It's the deadliest fire in Japan since a 2001 blaze in Tokyo killed 44 people.

Kyoto fire department official Kazuhiro Hayashi says 36 others have been injured, 10 of them critically. Hideaki Hatta, head of Kyoto Animation, told reporters the company had gotten threats by emails in the past but responded “sincerely” each time.Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also mourned for the victims. Abe tweeted: “I express my condolences to the people who were killed, and pray for the earliest possible recovery of those who were injured.”
