Kristi Noem, Donald Trump's pick for DHS Secretary, is undergoing her first confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The hearing, originally scheduled for Wednesday, is crucial for Noem's confirmation, as she faces scrutiny over her past actions and policies. Noem's nomination comes amid a time of heightened debate surrounding border security and immigration.

Kristi Noem, Donald Trump 's nominee for the Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) head, is facing Senators today at her first confirmation hearing. Noem, a two-term South Dakota governor and former U.S. congresswoman, is appearing before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Her hearing was initially scheduled for Wednesday. She seems to have strong backing from Republican senators, who will be crucial to her confirmation.

During Trump's first four years in office, six individuals served as the DHS secretary. Noem's hearing can be watched live in the video player provided. If confirmed, she would lead one of the federal government's largest agencies and play a key role in Trump's border security overhaul. She would succeed outgoing DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was impeached by Republicans in early 2024 due to their dissatisfaction with the number of migrants crossing the southern border. Noem would oversee Trump's plans for a large-scale deportation operation and stricter border access. Agencies under her control include U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Citizenship and Immigration Services. Beyond these agencies, the department is responsible for securing airline transportation, protecting high-profile individuals, responding to natural disasters, and more.Last year, Noem faced widespread criticism from both Democrats and Republicans for revealing in her memoir that she killed her 14-month-old dog. In an excerpt of 'No Going Back,' Noem wrote that she took her 14-month-old female dog, Cricket, to a 'gravel pit' near her farm and shot the animal because it had killed and eaten several chickens and was deemed 'less than worthless' and 'untrainable.' When the memoir was released, Noem was a potential candidate for vice president on Trump's reelection ticket, which ultimately went to Ohio Sen. JD Vance. Some argue that her admission of animal abuse damaged her career and chances of becoming VP.As her hearings begin, it's unclear if Noem is still banned from certain parts of the state she governs. Noem was barred from entering a large portion of tribal lands in South Dakota early last year after making public statements that tribal leaders were accommodating drug cartels on their reservations. This allegation has been widely denied by tribal leaders. The Flandreau Santee Sioux tribe in South Dakota lifted its ban on Noem from its territories on Wednesday, just two days before her first Senate committee hearing. This tribe, one of the state's nine tribes, issued a statement on Wednesday dissolving its order and expressing its support for her nomination as DHS secretary. The Flandreau Santee Sioux tribe was not the only one to formally ban Noem last year, but it is unclear if other tribes have lifted their bans. The Associated Press left messages Thursday with the other eight tribes in the state.
