Film critic Jonathan Sim's review of Kraven the Hunter, a Sony superhero movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
sees its third entry this year. It’s a Marvel superhero movie that isn’t exactly stirring the masses, but the SSU has never been on the level of the MCU. When you release films like Morbius, you tend to lose some goodwill with your audience.as Sergei Kravinoff, a big-game hunter who must fight off foes in a world of superheroes and supervillains, Kraven the Hunter is not a disaster. We’ve seen worse from this franchise. Much worse. But the bar is low and this movie doesn’t exactly clear it.
However, one thing to note about the action is how ridiculous it is. This is not a grounded film at all, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s fun to see physics thrown out the window as Kraven performs insane feats with his powers. Hechinger has been everywhere this year, turning in performances in Thelma, Nickel Boys, and Gladiator II. His performance isn’t bad here, but his other work is superior. His character does excellent impressions of people, and while a scene meant to showcase his abilities was unexpectedly hilarious, I’m not sure if it was his intention. Taylor-Johnson meanwhile has always been great, playing good guys in Kick-Ass, Godzilla, and Tenet and bad guys in Nocturnal Animals and The Fall Guy.
