LSU and women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey have agreed to a new 10-year, $32 million deal that will make her the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball, according to multiple reports. News of the deal, which is expected to be approved Friday by the school’s board of supervisors, was first reported byMulkey earlier this year led LSU to a national championship in her second season at the school. It was her fourth title as a head coach after she won three at Baylor.
The deal will make Mulkey the second-highest paid coach at LSU, behind football coach Brian Kelly — and ahead of men’s basketball coach Matt McMahon and baseball coach Jay Johnson, who won a national title in June.The new deal also makes Mulkey the top-paid coach in women’s college basketball, ahead of South Carolina coach Dawn Staley and Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma, both of whom agreed to new contracts in 2021.Staley, who has won two NCAA titles, agreed to a seven-year, $22.7 million deal.
LSU hired Mulkey from Baylor in April 2021, offering the now 61-year-old a chance to coach closer to where she grew up in Tickfaw, La. Mulkey played point guard at Louisiana Tech in the early 1980s, winning a pair of national titles in 1981 and 1982. She spent another 15 seasons there as an assistant coach starting in 1985. Three years into the job, she won another championship in 1988.
