'Donovan Mitchell is the key to this change for this team, and it’s the reason why you look at them as contenders at this point. He is such a dynamic, dynamic player since the moment he has stepped into this league,' Durant said Monday.
“Yeah, I think it started with our pace, for us to get early opportunities and early looks before the defense set,” Vaughn said. “We got stops. We got stops defensively and we took advantage of some lesser shooters at times in the paint and then to rebound the basketball, and then off we go in transition, so nicely done tonight.”Nets rim protector Nic Claxton was charged with holding down the paint, a task he executed well as Allen finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds on 2 of 5 shooting.
“We took advantage of some matchups that we liked, as far as when the basketball was in our hand, whether it was -- I think their rotations were a little different tonight because of our ability to score the basketball, and so that put pressure on them,” Vaughn said. “I think we were the aggressors and kind of dictated on both ends of the floor, so give credit for our guys for doing that.”
The Nets outrebounded the Cavaliers, 38-33. Cleveland finished 39 of 82 from the field and went 13 of 36 from deep. Playing on his 11th anniversary of entering the league, Irving -- who wore the Wine and Gold for six memorable years -- reeled off four 3s in less than three minutes to spearhead a 21-6 run and help Brooklyn take a 65-49 lead into halftime. He then dropped 15 points in the fourth quarter to help fend off a Garland-fueled rally. Another return to Cleveland conjured up performances of old inside the familiar arena.
Upon landing in Cleveland on Saturday night, he reflected on his time with the Cavaliers with a single tweet.
