A judge on Monday ruled against Attorney General Ken Paxton ’s effort to stop Bexar County from mass mailing voter registration forms after the county said all the applications had already been sent out. A third-party vendor hired by the county mailed the forms to roughly 210,000 county residents by last Tuesday, making Paxton’s legal challenge moot, the county’s lawyers argued in court.
Flouting Paxton threat, Bexar County commissioners hire firm to register voters State District Judge Antonia Arteaga agreed, saying Paxton’s request for a temporary restraining order came too late. Lawyers from the attorney general’s office did not show up at the original hearing for a restraining order on Sep. 6, according to News 4 San Antonio. Arteaga also denied the state’s request to sanction the county if it sends more applications or pursues similar contracts.

Some Republicans questioned whether the vendor was nonpartisan and pointed to previous comments by the CEO, Jeremy Smith, that boosting registration would be key to Democratic victories.
