A kayaker in New Zealand had a harrowing encounter with a great white shark while fishing. Matthew John Patrick Wells captured footage of the terrifying ordeal, which he says is an experience he'll never forget. Wells was fishing for yellowtail kingfish on January 30th when he spotted the shark, estimated to be about 4.5 meters long, in the water behind him. He was roughly 4 kilometers from the shore when the shark began following him.
For about 8 minutes, the shark persisted, staying close behind Wells as he paddled frantically. Wells initially tried to shake the shark by cutting the live bait off his fishing line and paddling away. He could be heard saying to himself, 'He’s following me. He’s still behind me. He’s going at my rudder. He’s just following me. F—, how do I get him to leave me alone? Please leave me alone, bro. Please leave me alone,' expressing his fear and desperation. He even considered throwing a water bottle overboard to distract the shark, acknowledging, 'I know I’m littering but it might take his attention away from me.' Despite his attempts, the shark continued to follow him for several minutes. Eventually, the shark departed, leaving Wells unharmed. Reflecting on the experience, Wells told Storyful, 'The shark eventually left me unharmed, but the experience is one I will never forget. It was a beautifully terrifying animal, an apex predator deserving of our utmost respect … I’m grateful I wasn’t on the menu this day.'
