"Coincidence is bound to happen. If 60,000 songs are being released a day on Spotify, that's 22 million songs a year. There are only 12 notes that are available," he responded on social media last year.
The plaintiff's in that case claim emails were sent within Sheeran's team acknowledging the songs sounded like one another. They ask to be compensated based on the percentage of the song the court decides was copied, even if the chord progression was taking coincidentally. If the jury finds Sheeran liable for copyright infringement, the court will hold another trial to determine how much he and his labels should pay. The first trial is expected to last up to a week.
