Executions are incredibly rare in New York. The last one was 60 years ago and all the defense has to do is convince one of the 12 jurors to hold out. After federal prosecutors said Saipov "committed a brutal terrorist attack in this city for ISIS," the defense sought a softer portrayal of him, calling his mother, Mukaddas Saipova, to testify.
"If I insisted him to come with me, if I said, 'Take your family and children and come to Tashkent,' maybe this wouldn't have happened," Saipova said."I saw on TV, and I don't remember much after that. Because apparently I fainted, and they called an ambulance. They took me to a hospital. And my husband was taken to the police," Saipova testified. She stayed in the hospital for a week.
