Dustin Byron Thompson, 38, of Columbus, was found guilty of a total of six charges following a trial in Washington, D.C.

Violent insurrectionists loyal to President Donald Trump storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington. An Ohio man charged with stealing a coat rack from the U.S. Capitol was found guilty by a federal jury on Thursday. WASHINGTON, D.C. — The lawyer for a Columbus, Ohio, man who admitted to participating in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol argued his client was coerced by Donald Trump to do the former president’s dirty work.

Thompson was led out of the building by Capitol police, but later re-entered with Lyon, prosecutors say. Thompson went back to the parliamentarian’s office and stole an ornate coat rack. He sent a photo to Lyon of himself posing with the coat rack, as well as a video that showed him yelling “Woooo!!” The video also showed a ransacked office.

During the trial, defense attorney Samuel Shamansky said Thompson hasn’t avoided taking responsibility for his conduct that day. “This shameful chapter in our history is all on TV,” Shamansky told jurors. Thompson, who testified on Wednesday, admitted that he joined the mob’s attack. He said he regretted his “disgraceful” behavior.
