A federal judge says that the Florida voter registration process 'failed' citizens but denies motion for extension

After realizing there was a problem, Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee consulted with Gov. Ron DeSantis and extended registration for seven hours on Tuesday.

United States District Court Judge Mark E. Walker called Lee’s decision a “half measure” and said her “cure” was flawed because she didn’t notify the public about the extended deadline until noon at the earliest, which gave people limited time to register. Walker wrote he had to decide if Lee’s inability to run a functional voter registration website in the final hours and her brief deadline extension “pass constitutional muster.”

Walker wrote his decision was “an incredibly close call,” but said, “the state’s interest in preventing chaos in its already precarious —and perennially chaotic — election outweighs the substantial burden imposed on the right to vote.” “This case is about how a state failed its citizens,” Walker wrote, adding, “in this case, potential voters attempted to perform their civic duty, to exercise their fundamental right, only to be thwarted, once again, by a state that seemingly is never prepared for an election.”“Notwithstanding the fact that cinemas across the country remain closed, somehow, I feel like I’ve seen this movie before.
