A Travis County District Judge is recommending that Allen Andrew Causey , convicted of 21-year-old Anita Byington 's murder in 1991, be granted a new trial after the District Attorney 's office claims the trial prosecutor withheld evidence during the original murder trial.
We agree with the Judge’s recommendation in this case that Mr. Causey be granted a new trial because the trial prosecutor withheld evidence during the original murder trial. In addition, new evidence recently came to light that placed an alternate perpetrator at the scene of the crime and showed that the alternative suspect engaged in a cover-up.
They also argue important information about the APD Homicide Unit's history of coerced and false confessions was withheld from Causey’s attorneys at trial. The family expressed frustration with what they view as a lack of representation for the victim’s interests during the writ proceedings. They allege that critical evidence supporting Causey’s guilt was omitted from the hearings and accuse the DA’s Office of failing to adequately consult or inform them throughout the process.
