The early Rotten Tomatoes score is in for John Cena and Alison Brie’s new action comedy movie, and, at the time of writing, it’s sitting at 0%.

Directed by Pierre Morel , Freelance stars Cena as an ex-special forces soldier tasked with protecting a journalist, played by Community's Alison Brie, after a violent coup breaks out during her interview with a South American dictator.
Now, on the day of Freelance's release in theaters, reviews for the film have started to emerge online, and critics are really not enjoying it. As of this writing, the movie holds a rare score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes with 15 reviews. Freelance's Rotten Tomatoes score could well change as more reviews pour in, but it's currently the second film Cena has appeared in to earn 0% after 2010's Fred: The Movie.
Why Freelance's Reviews Are So Bad The first trailer for Freelance was released several months ago, teasing a goofy, lighthearted, and action-packed adventure. Action comedies are very rarely critical darlings, but both Cena and Brie have proven comedy chops and charisma, suggesting there could at least be some fun to be had. Clearly, however, something has gone very wrong, and Freelance marks Cena's second critical dud after the panned Vacation Friends 2.
In her review for THR, Angie Han writes: "Freelance fails to deliver on every front. Worse, it barely seems to try." She claims that the film delivers neither funny jokes nor good action, which is certainly a problem for an action comedy. Writing for Slant, Derek Smith says that the movie has a "void of chemistry between the three leads" and echoes Han's complaints about humor that doesn't land, ultimately calling Freelance "a cinematic Frankenstein.
Ross Bonaime awards the film a "D" in his review for Collider, taking issue with Jacob Lentz's "confounding" screenplay, which over-complicates the story at every turn and lacks any real jokes. Nick Rogers of the Midwest Film Journal writes the most scathing review of Freelance yet, criticizing the flick as a "misbegotten heap" that feels like a "fake movie within a movie".
