Joe Mazzulla will return as the Celtics coach for next season, team president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said. Stevens also says he will add to the coaching staff this offseason. Is Mazzulla the right man for the job?

Mazzulla took over as the Celtics coach under crazy circumstances after Udoka’s suspension. He had almost no time to prepare for training camp or the regular season. To make his job more difficult, he had the weight of championship expectations from the start, putting every mistake of his under a microscope. As Stevens pointed out, Mazzulla still led the Celtics to 57 regular season wins with the second-ranked offense and defense. They were 48 minutes from reaching the Finals.

The bottom line from Stevens was that although the result was short of what they wanted, they were incredibly close to being in the finals and still on their way to achieving their goal. But whether it’s actually showing up early in the series to not throw away their hard-earned home-court advantage or showing the patience to find great shots, there were some subtle but significant areas this team needs to address to get to the mountaintop.

“And so, yeah, was he perfect? Would he like to have some moments back? Every coach would. Even the coaches nobody talks about would. We all that have coached know how hard that is. And at the same time, our players, our staff, everybody around him believes in him and we’ve gotta do our best to support him going forward. And I think it’s really important that we share results here. Outside of our walls, we can do the dissecting of whose fault things are.
