Joe Lycett’s protest against David Beckham’s association with the 2022 Qatar World Cup has been nominated for a major award. The comedian pretended to destroy £10,000 in protest against the footballer’s involvement in event.

Joe had urged him to back out of a reported multi-million pound deal with Qatar, and when he didn’t respond, posted aBut after sparking a major conversation and some backlash, Joe revealed the money in the shredder was fake and he had donated the sum to LGBTQ+ charities – what he had shredded instead was David’s iconic cover shoot for GQ magazine.

The British LGBT Awards have now nominated Joe for the media moment award, for drawing awareness to the issue and sparking a massive conversation around the lack of rights in Qatar. The star appeared to shred £10k in protest at David Beckham’s involvement with the 2022 Qatar World Cup Going head-to-head for the celebrity ally award are the likes of Alison Hammond, Harry Potter star Emma Watson, Harry Styles, Michelle Visage and Sir Patrick Stewart.
