Acting Temple University President JoAnne Epps has died after she fell ill during a campus event Tuesday, Board of Trustee's Chairman Mitchell Morgan said.

Epps was attending the Charles L. Blockson Memorial Service at the Temple Performing Arts Center in North Philadelphia. The event was being livestreamed on the university's website.

Epps was a longtime member of Temple University's faculty and leadership, holding roles as Dean of Temple Law School, Executive Vice President and Provost of Temple University. The Board of Trustees appointed Epps in April to become the transitional leader following the resignation of former president Jason Wingard. "I would never have imagined even becoming a professor at Temple, let alone being in this position," Epps said in a recent interview with FOX 29's Jennifer Lee.

"I had actually turned in my retirement papers at the end of February, which is a very serious and sobering experience, but I have to say that after I handed them in I had not a moment’s regret, so I knew I’d made the right decision, so I was headed in a very different direction." University officials are expected to provide more information during a live press conference at 4:30 p.m. that you can watch live on FOX 29.
