The $1.8 million project at the intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street included paving over two corner parking lots to create plazas.
Jersey City officials celebrated the addition of new plaza space and other improvements at the historic Bergen Square during an official ribbon cutting Monday, marking the end to a multi-seasonal facelift at the intersection.
“It’s a really unique urban space in that it’s in the daily lives of people,” said Barkha Patel, the city’s director of infrastructure. “It’s not a park that’s remote in another part of the city that you have to drive to or get to that’s inaccessible, it’s already a part of people’s daily lives, but no one really knew how special it was because it hadn’t been fully activated.”
“We see every day more and more activity here,” said Mayor Steven Fulop. “It has worked and we’re very proud of that.” Bergen Square was founded in 1660 when Dutch settlers established it as the town square. This September, the community will hold the fifth annual Bergen Square Day festival.
