The city has spent at least $150,000 for Shea’s representation, but city officials did not provide a total figure of the contracts awarded for the other defendants Monday.

Jersey City has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in the ongoing legal battle over a Jersey City Police Department deputy chief and a retired captain’s federal whistleblower lawsuit, and it’s going to the well at least one more time — even as a settlement conference has been scheduled.

The city council is being asked Wednesday to approve a resolution that adds $40,000 to a contract for the law firm Apruzzese, McDermott, Mastro and Murphy to continue representing one of the defendants, former Sgt. Robert Sjosward, in the 2015 complaint brought by Kelly Chesler and Joseph Ascolese. The additional funds brings the firm’s total to $240,000. Other Jersey City defendants being represented by outside counsel include Public Safety Director James Shea, former Police Chief Phil Zacche and retired Lt. Terrance Crowley, retired Deputy Chief John Connors and retired Police Officer John Peters. A city attorney, James Johnston, is representing the city.
