Senior Austin Amesquita helped the Mustangs to a 12-2 win over Lanier, going 2 for 4 with a homer, triple, four RBIs and a stolen base.
Austin Amesquita showed off his power in helping Jefferson take down Lanier 12-2 on the baseball diamond last week, going 2 for 4 with a homer and a triple while batting in four runs and nabbing a stolen base. His excellence at the plate helped him garner Express-News Athlete of the Week honors over five other finalists.
The other four finalists for Athlete of the Week were O'Connor's Haley Carder, Pieper's Owen Harris, Davenport's Rylee Reisdorph and Warren's Nick Ross. Carder, the softball player of the week, hit a game-tying 3-run home run in the sixth inning to help the Panthers beat district-leading Harlan 11-10 and also earned the win in the circle, allowing just two hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Harris and Reisdorph were named boys and girls soccer players of the week, respectively.
