Hostetter is the highest profile Orange County Jan. 6 defendant to go to trial so far for his alleged role in the breach of the U.S. Capitol.

. A decade after leaving law enforcement and settling in to a second career as a yoga instructor, Hostetter publicly emerged as a vocal critic of pandemic-era health restrictions, joining other members of the Orange County conservative community in leading a series of anti-mask rallies.

Following the violent Jan. 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters seeking to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory, Hostetter and Taylor — along with four alleged Riverside County members of the extremist, right-wing Three Percenters militia —Prosecutors allege that Hostetter brought weapons with him on his cross-country drive to Washington D.C., and, alongside Taylor, attended the Jan. 6 Trump rally with a backpack containing a hatchet.

. He also claimed — without providing direct evidence — that Taylor and other former allies in Orange County conservative circles were government informants. . In a “statement of offense” filed along with the written plea deal, Taylor said he gave Hostetter a backpack containing a knife, a stun baton, two hatchets and carbon fiber knuckle gloves” to drive to Washington D.C.
