A 48-year-old Italian tourist was killed in a shark attack while vacationing with his family in Egypt.
Gianluca Di Gioia, a 48-year-old man from Rome, died after being attacked by a tiger shark in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt on Sunday, December 22. Di Gioia was vacationing with his family at the Marsa Alam resort to celebrate his birthday. According to reports, his 69-year-old friend tried to stop the attack which occurred in deep water outside the designated swimming area. Di Gioia was also an official with the European Union, working at the European External Action Service since 2012.
His body is currently at the Port Ghalib hospital mortuary, and an investigation into his death is underway. The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment has closed the area where the attack took place until Wednesday, January 1st. The Italian Embassy in Cairo is reportedly assisting Di Gioia's family
