Eilish McColgan thought she had bettered her own British and European 10K record—until it was discovered the course was 150 meters short.
10km road race on October 2, she celebrated breaking her own British and European records. It was a strong ending to a fantastic season for the Commonwealth Games champion.
However, it has now emerged that those records have been invalidated, after the course was found to be short. Paul Foster of the Great Run Company, who organized the event, said: ‘We were recently made aware of a discrepancy with the 10km course at this year’s Great Scottish Run. Following an internal investigation, we have established it was 150 meters short. The shortfall in the distance was wholly due to human error.
, "but these things happen! Thankfully my British and European Record still stands from the Great Manchester 10K. So it’s all good!"In 2016, the half marathon was also found to be 150m shortCourse errors like this of course also effect amateur runners, as their PBs are no longer officially valid.
Those running the half marathon on the day will be relieved as the error had only a marginal effect on the 13.1 mile course, and that was within the allowed tolerance—so their times and any PBs will still stand.
