This was the team's first year back since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You can tell they want to be here, which we truly appreciate,” Kane told PennLive. “These players and coaches who come in just bring so much excitement. We know that Coach Franklin really helps the players understand how much they bring to the patients and families here, and that is evident when they come. They are engaged with our patients, they love playing with the families, and, you know, bringing smiles to the kids that are here. That means so much.
Taking the team to visit the hospital each year is something Franklin holds near and dear to his heart because he said he has a daughter who has sickle cell. So, he knows and fully understands what its like for parents who have kids with illnesses, but he also has first-hand experience on the challenges that come along with ensuring your child is receiving the best treatment and proper care.
And for Franklin, having his players be a part of an event like this is what model athletes and good human beings are comprised of, because in his eyes, giving back and comforting others going through tough times is what life’s all about.“Our daughter has sickle cell, which can be a very challenging disease,” Franklin said.
“We’ve been blessed and fortunate so far... I think it’s been enlightening for us as parents. So, you know, obviously being able to come and do some things like this and be able to build some relationships shows we’re all in this together at Penn State, and we’re all in this together in the state of Pennsylvania.
