Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fire on Sunday, sparking fears of a wider war in the region as Israel and Hamas aim to negotiate a ceasefire. Following reports that Hezbollah was planning an attack, Israel initiated a preemptive strike against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Hundreds of rockets were then launched from southern Lebanon into Israel by Hezbollah in retaliation. Hezbollah’s planned attacks were said to be revenge for the assassination of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.

Authorities in Lebanon said the Israeli strikes killed three people, while Israel said one of its soldiers was killed. President Biden is closely monitoring the events in Israel and Lebanon."At his direction, senior U.S. officials have been communicating continuously with their Israeli counterparts," National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted early Sunday morning Israel identified “Hezbollah preparations to attack Israel” and he directed the Israel Defense Force to “initiate action to eliminate the threat.”Israel launched a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon early Sunday in an attempt to stop a missile attack by Hezbollah — which later fired rockets into Israel’s northern area.
