Whether you call it Mischief Night, Goosey Night, Cabbage Night or Devil’s Night, some say the Oct. 30 tradition of pranks and mayhem has grown less mischievous.

Dozens of children and teens — and even some adults — blanketed tree-lined Parker Avenue with toilet paper on Mischief Night in 2018 in Manasquan, N.J.in Elmwood Park seems like it used to be a bigger deal.

“I don’t want to jinx myself or give somebody motivation to prove me wrong, but it has dwindled over the years,” the police chief said. There was a time when municipalities were sufficiently concerned enough to erect roadblocks on Oct. 30, he said.“Minor criminal mischief, but nothing crazy. It doesn’t have the lure it once did,” Mastronardy said.

For those who do know about the tradition of engaging in pranks and mischief the night before Halloween, there are variations on the names. While many call it Mischief Night, others opt for Cabbage Night, Goosey Night, Gate Night, Trick Night or Devil’s Eve, according to the survey. Police in Riverside Township are advising of possible, real-life consequences for anyone getting too carried away.

Now, Mischief Night in Branchville typically involves nothing more than toilet paper in a few trees and caution tape around cars, Frato said.When Jefferson Mayor Eric Wilsusen was growing up, Oct. 30 hijinks included smashing pumpkins on the road and occasionally lighting bags of leaves on fire, he said.
