The hosts delve into the role of Max Strus for his potential season debut on Friday and whether he'll be in the starting lineup or how soon until that could be the case.Max Strus itching to return to Cavs’ lineup, could make debut Friday night vs. MilwaukeeKenny Atkinson’s system promotes diversity and unpredictability in offense. Continuous movement with the ball and body creates confusion for defenses.Caris LeVert is a strong candidate for Sixth Man of the Year.

And it is halftime now at the time of this recording. It is now 10 30 PM Eastern Standard Time. But we got my man Chris in the building today. And I just want to get your take on how the league is shaping up and how interesting these different days can be when any day a different team can stack a win against an opponent that might be more favorable than them.Well, think the layoff has something to do with it.

Like they’ve done their internal studies of trying to identify, okay, what was the root cause of that performance against Washington? Not something that really bothers them all that much, not something that impacts them in the bigger picture, but for the sense of if we get into another situation where there’s a long layoff, what do we do differently?Do we do less practice? Do we do more practice? Do we not stay in Miami? Do we come back to Cleveland instead? So all those different things.

need Dean’s size or they want a specific matchup it’s just you know Max isn’t at a point right now where he’s ready to play Starters minutes and I think Ethan it’s probably going to be maybe a week maybe two weeks that he’s going to maintain this minute restriction because on the offensive end of the floor. So this is an opportunity, I think, for Dean, you know, to step into the starting lineup, find his offensive rhythm, something that has been lost, maybe find his jumper and see if he can make the decision a little bit more difficult on Kenny Atkinson.Okay, and I get that. And I think that makes a whole lot of sense, especially in the grand scheme of things when you talk about trying to help Dean Wade try and get his feet back up under him.

The Cavs tried some of those things too, right? Some of the stuff with Evan Mobley at the elbow and the DHO stuff, the Cavs ran that stuff too. But when it came down to it, there was so much of a reliance on the pick and roll. There was so much of a reliance on Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell. And there’s so much predictability within the offense that it just made the Cavs a little bit easier to guard.Evan Mobley bringing the ball up the floor, inverted pick and roll.

a lot to go into when it comes to the stylistic difference. And we heard it when we talked to Max Struce, even though it was the first time we had talked to him. He was like, this is exactly the offense that I’ve been wanting to run since I got here. Why? Because of the spacing, the pace and all those different things. And I know these guys don’t try and or Max’s...

How’s the middle of the pack with this level of talent? That’s what the front office was thinking, right? That’s what some players were thinking, including Max. And there’s reasons to say that they underachieved on the offensive end of the floor. There’s reasons to say that they were so focused on defense and a lot of the decision-making for JB was tied into defense and what’s going to give us the best pathway to success on defense. And they were so just static.

just came up short. Obviously woulda, coulda, shoulda if we were fully healthy, but can’t think like that. We had what we had and went out and did what we did, went down fighting. So like that was the indication. And Chris, I know you’ve talked about this at an abundance over the off season of what Max Struce has thought about the offense last year and all those different things.

who they should have given more credit to. Was it Jared Allen? Was it Evan Mobley? Who do we put on our all defense ballot? Who do we put in the running for defensive player of the year? It’s DeAndre Hunter. He’s made such an impact for them. He has elevated them to a different place. He was integral in their NBA Cup run, but he’s been that kind of impact player, that kind of effective throughout the course of this season. And like, it’s easy to look at the Hawks and say like, that’s one of the differences with the Hawks.

Jaylen Brown played 36 minutes. And then you look at the bench and Al Horford played 22, Peyton Pritchard played 30, Jayden Springer played 13 minutes. And then they have three other players listed as like they got in the game, but the ESPN app literally has them at zero minutes, right? And one shot taken. A combined 16 points.

And, you know, obviously he is dealing with a sort of achy knee that requires constant maintenance. It’s something that the Cavs have this big picture plan in place when it comes to getting through the regular season and getting to the playoffs in a different physical state, a different mental state. And that’s going to involve Karras.

And for Karas to already be, according to oddsmakers, fifth, it tells you that he is getting recognition and people do understand the impact that he has made and the value that he brings to the gaps.Next question from our subtexters comes from Brian in San Diego. He says, the buzz around Max Struess coming back from his injury, I think we are all forgetting that there is only one basketball and the core four needs their touches.

It’s not about percentages. It’s about volume and Max, and it’s about reputation too. Max has the reputation to just warrant a different kind of coverage and a different kind of attention from the opposing defense. So I just don’t think he needs to be a volume shooter within this offense, within the system and within this starting lineup to make the kind of impact that the Cavs are so excited about him making. Just putting him on the floor, he’s a threat.

And he’s going to be the guy when he gets his minute restricted lifted and when he gets an opportunity to play starters minutes and move into the starting lineup, he’s going to be the guy, Ethan, that matches up with Jason Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Chris Middleton, those kinds of players. throughout the course of this thing. Azuka Koro has been the starter at Small Forward since the minute that Dean Wade stepped away from the team because of his illness. And before that, Dean Wade was the consistent starter at Small Forward until he was unavailable to play for a two-game stretch. So he’s not doing it based on matchups. He’s not going to do it based on matchups. That is very much coach speak. That is very much a fraudulent thing that he is trying to get people to believe.

can talk about Karis DeVert having a hot streak in the first quarter against the Brooklyn Nets. The game plan changed then, not in the second half. So being able to make adjustments on the fly is one of the reasons that Kenny Atkinson is so beloved in the locker room, but it’s also why he has the respect of all of the guys because it’s not just for one player or another, it’s for everybody. But.by the way, you brought up Ty Jerome.

just how involved and how consistent will his workload be when this team is at close to full strength because there’s already signs of him losing playing time to some of these other guys in the rotation.glad you brought up Sam Merrill because that’s where we’re gonna end this podcast. This subtext says, there been a change with Sam Merrill’s shooting form? While the rest of his game has expanded, it seems like his three-point shooting has gone down.

a different kind of way because he has a reputation, because he’s on the scouting report, because teams are paying more attention to him, because he’s playing more consistently. And Kenny’s working theory right now is that the more you play, the more you’re exposed to a defense, the more that your flaws could get exposed, the more tired you could get throughout the course of a game. And

Take into account in this stat. He’s averaging 2.9 three-point attempts again while being wide open That means six or more feet from the nearest defender.

no matter how the looks are going to come for him. But there’s not this belief that this is the kind of shooter that Sam is, you know what I mean? Like there’s a belief from Donovan, there’s a belief from front office members, there’s a belief from this coaching staff that Sam is just a better shooter than what he has shown to this point. And the hope is...
