Apple has issued iOS 16.5.1 (a), the second official Rapid Security Response update, fixing an iPhone flaw that’s already being used in real-life attacks.
It looks like Apple has pulled iOS 16.5.1 because while the Rapid Security Response update fixed a security flaw, the patch then caused something else to break. According to MacRumors, “Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Zoom, and other websites started giving a warning about not being supported on the Safari browser following the Rapid Security Response updates.”If you have already downloaded and installed iOS 16.5.1 , you can go back to the previous version.
It’s likely Apple will re-release the iOS 16.5.1 , Rapid Security Response any minute now, so if you do remove it or haven’t applied it yet, keep an eye out. I’ll also update here onIf you do remove iOS 16.5.1 , it’s also worth considering the security trade-off first. Security and functionality are often at odds, and in some cases, putting up with iPhone bugs is worth it.
Security researcher Sean Wright calls iOS 16.5.1 , “an important security update from Apple.” He says the issue fixed by iOS 16.5.1 is serious but “will most likely be targeted at high-profile users such as politicians and reporters.” If you are a high-profile target such as a business, government worker, journalist or dissident who has already applied iOS 16.5.1 , it’s worth sacrificing some of your iPhone’s functionality.
