In the quiet solitude of sunshine filtering through Mount Hope Cemetery Monday morning, a dedication of unmarked graves took place.

We may not know their names, but they were once a part of our community, and now, they have finally received long overdue recognition.

The ceremony honored the graves of those who died in the Monroe County Alms House, Penitentiary, or what was then the Monroe County Insane Asylum."I think this is a great opportunity to let folks know that these people were here, and that even hundreds of years later, their lives matter," said City of Rochester Mayor Malik Evans. "In the end, we should make sure that everyone's life matters, regardless of one's station or placement in life.", a professor at St.

"I really couldn't be more delighted that it's ready, primarily for the folks who are buried here, but also ready for the community as well," Thibodeau said. "In talking with people, it seems to me this is really an aspect of our community. Bringing this history to life, I think is really, really important, and I couldn't be happier that we're able to do that.
