Intel's 14th Gen CPUs were originally meant to include the revolutionary Meteor Lake architecture but now appear to be more of a current architecture speed bump

It's potentially good news and bad news for PC enthusiasts this week as rumors at the Taiwan Computex trade show point at Intel's next generation of CPUs being a refresh of its current Raptor Lake models rather than the highly anticipated Meteor Lake that was originally pencilled in for launch later this year.RONEN TOPELBERG - PHOTOGRAPHER 052-6383906, which has heard from numerous manufacturers in Taiwan, who are preparing new products.

These motherboards use the same socket as current LGA1700 motherboards, which include those with Z690 and Z790 chipsets so in theory, the good news is if you have a Z690 motherboard, there should be no reason it can't support the new CPUs as well as existing 12th Gen and 13th Gen CPUs. The bad news is that the highly anticipated Meteor Lake architecture may be a while coming for desktop PC owners with 14th Gen CPUs merely a speed bump of existing CPUs.

Intel has played a few tricks in the past, though, requiring new CPU sockets for CPU generations that were all but identical with questionable alterations to the pinout on the CPU requiring an annoying socket change and new motherboards. However, that wouldn't make sense this time seeing as we still expect Meteor Lake - the successor to the current Raptor Lake architecture - to be right around the corner.
