Trey Lance and the 49ers’ offense couldn’t generate first-half points in their preseason finale at Houston.
Good thing Trey Lance threw a touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel in their last meaningful game together, that being the 2021 home finale.
As for connecting with Samuel — after he skipped offseason practices and camp’s first four games — Lance is willing to try, try again, as he should. Maybe defensive pass interference calls will come, unlike Thursday’s shot. This was Samuel’s preseason debut, as it was for Aiyuk and Kittle, who also were 0-for-1 on Lance targets.
A year ago, Lance broke his index finger in the preseason finale. This time, he appeared to emerge healthy, which was priority No. 1. “We talk kind of just in passing. He’s not really around for practices or meetings or anything like that,” Lance said. “Nate Sudfeld and Brock have been that for me. They’ve done a great job, those two guys I know have my back.”, whose hamstring injury likely will send him to injured reserve and out the first four games. Shanahan said he believes the 49ers have enough depth to compensate for Ward’s absence.
Lance defended them: “They’re doing a great job. They did their job tonight. A couple of ones, I could have gotten the ball out faster, for sure. They’re doing a great job and stacking days.”Called for pass interference in the end zone on the 49ers’ first defensive series, Womack did better the next time he got targeted there.
