How the starting grid of the 110th running of the Indy 500 will be determined.
All 33 NTT IndyCar Series entries will attempt to qualify on Day 1 at 11 a.m. Positions 16-33 will be locked in Saturday and those cars will not requalify Sunday.
Once every car in the original qualifying order has completed an attempt, teams can make additional runs using two qualifying lanes:Cars entering this lane must withdraw their previous qualifying speed to receive priority access to the track. Teams may makefrom Saturday advance to Sunday’s qualifying rounds, while the nine fastest drivers automatically lock into the Top 12 session. Drivers ranked 10th through 15th from Saturday compete for the. Cars qualify in reverse order based on Saturday speeds, slowest to fastest.
Each car receives one attempt. Following the session, advancing teams will participate in cool-down laps behind the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X pace car to help cool engines before the next round. The Top 12 session begins with the three advancing drivers from the Final 15, followed by the nine drivers already locked in from Saturday.advance to the Firestone Fast Six to compete for the pole.from the Top 12 session, slowest to fastest. Each driver receives one attempt.
The fastest qualifier earns the NTT P1 Award, the Indianapolis 500 pole position and a $100,000 prize. Championship points also are awarded to the Top 12 qualifiers, descending from 12 points for the pole winner to one point for the 12th-fastest qualifier.
